I would like to discuss in this paper The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot (1915) and understand the essence of this poem. I think it is necessary not only to think about the essence of the poem, but also pay attention on the narrator’s character and his thoughts depicted in the poem.
The evolution of reflective approach in creative Eliot’s looks is different and interesting. Thinking about Prufrock’s character we see the person, who grasped boundlessness of the world and own possibilities and lost one’s head before this boundlessness. His indecision is not the display of cowardice: he is a bold, frank man. His doubts are a result of deep reflections about nature of human life. A circumstance is required from him actions, but he decided that he knows this life and it is no sense to change something.

It is possible to say that narrator keeps suggesting he is not brave enough to ask a certain question, but I want to think about this question and in my opinion his question is similar to Hamlet’s eternal question. I think that this character did not lose the actuality in the 20th century – century of social shocks, when everybody decides own eternal Hamlet’s questions.
Already at the beginning of the 20th century the English writer Thomas Eliot wrote a poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, which represented despair of poet from realization of senselessness of the life. The protagonist of this poem of criticism was exactly named fallen Hamlet of the 20th century.
Thus, taking into account all above discussed information it is possible come to the conclusion that in phrase “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons” is a big sense, which shows us reality through the prism of own perception of the world. The overall meaning of the poem changed through this line and we see mental mechanisms that regulate this process of human existence.
