The American Psychological Association is clear in its position as outlined in the 16 guidelines it has adopted for working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals. Often, this client population confronts the human services professional in considering the influence of personal values and bias. “The Case of Myrna and Rose” is considered from three very different perspectives beginning on p. 135 in our text. Select what you feel is the most preferable of the three counselor scenarios following this case study in your textbook and support your choice with an academic discussion that avoids any personal beliefs you may have about this issue. In my opinion the most preferable scenario was suggested by the counselor C. This counselor acts in a full accordance with the guidelines of the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling. One of its recommendations to the mental health professionals states that: “Competent counselors recognize social prejudices and discrimination experienced by LGBT individuals and assist them in overcoming internalized negative attitudes toward their sexual and gender identities.” (Corey, Corey, & Callanan, 2011)
Counselor C didn’t attempt to change the sexual orientation of her lesbian patients, because she’s aware that its unacceptable and much attempts should not be undertaken. This counselor demonstrates that he has the same attitude toward this lesbian couple, like any other heterosexual couples, so they could feel comfortable with he and be able to share their problems and considerations. This woman has the most professional approach in comparison to other suggested examples.
On the contrary to the great example of professional counselor that shows the loyal attitude and creates comfy atmosphere for patients, the worst scenario is counselor A. This counselor suggested examining the sexual orientation of his patients.
This approach is absolutely unprofessional, because patients did not have any intend to discuss this issue and felt comfortable with their lesbian orientation. This professional has made mistake, including his own views on what’s right and what’s wrong, showing his disapproval of patients’ personal choices. These actions of counselor A are considered unacceptable and unprofessional. LGBT individuals do not usually want to explore matters of their sexual orientation and do not see it as a possible reason of their problems.
