Looking back on the last several centuries, it is very convenient to believe that independence from Britain was desired by all in the colonies. However, that was not the case. Assuming the role of a person in the colonies who does not support independence, how do you answer those who call for a permanent separation from Great Britain, including Thomas Paine? What arguments can you use to defend your views? Remember, you are also posting to this discussion as a person of the period who DOES NOT support independence.
As my goal in this paper is to assume the role of a person in the colonies who does not support independence, I will try to represent appropriate arguments against independence from Britain. First of all, it is known that not all the colonies call for independence.
Such colonies as Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York and Maryland are not ready to support independence. It means that they need more time to make such an important decision. It also means that many people are satisfied with their allegiance to the British Crown. Moreover, these middle colonies can secede from the Union after the declaration of independence. Secondly, it is known that France and Spain do not support the idea of independence from Britain.
They are afraid of new, strong and independent America. They are interested in the colonies allegiance to the British Crown. The reasons include both economic and military ones. Thirdly, the patriots call for independence from Britain because they do not want to pay taxes. However, they do not understand that it is very convenient that such a powerful state as Great Britain participates in the life of the colonies. Great Britain supplies the colonies with British products and supports the economy of the colonies. Those who call for a permanent separation from Great Britain, including Thomas Paine are making a serious mistake as they are at risk to be captured by other powerful states.
British laws guarantee safety for all the colonists. They do not understand that king’s power comes from God. As a member of the Church of England, I can state that it is wrong to oppose the King and the King’s power. It is our duty to be loyal to the King and to the Church. That is why all the Christians who live in the colonies should obey British laws. In other words, disobeying the King’s power stands for disobeying God. One more important argument is that the actions for independence can lead to war with Britain. It means that many colonists will be involved in war actions and will be killed by the powerful army of Britain.
