Essay on Ethical Issues: Theory, Practice, and Research

Part 1. Assessment and Diagnosis

The task is: “There is substantial debate among clinical practitioners concerning the role of assessment and diagnosis. After careful review of the arguments for and against psycho-diagnosis, what is your position? Be certain to include references to our readings in support of your position within an insightful academic posting. What are the potential ethical concerns of your position?”

In my opinion, the psychological diagnosis is an important part in the process of healing, although it has certain benefits and disadvantages. My position is for diagnosis, because I agree with the idea that the earlier the illness is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. But I would like to emphasize the importance of awareness of the helping professionals. They have to understand the diagnosis has a crucial influence on their patients.

Of course, labeling a person as “abnormal” will change the perception and self-perception of this diagnosed person, but it should be noted that the diagnosis itself may help the healing process. (Goldstein, 2000)

Among the benefits, the most substantial one is allowing patients to understand what kind of disorder they have and look for appropriate treatment. Therapists can assess what kind of treatment has to be provided, to create the treatment plan, and they are also able to make prognosis.

The majority of disorders could be overcome, so why should people suffer? It is known that the disorder creates problems in the lives of patients, influencing their behavior. The quality of life suffers as well.

There are many methods that may be used by helping professionals, for instance: drugs, workshops, and non-traditional practices.

The major requirement for the diagnosis making is that it should be made with the accurateness. The manner in which it is communicated to the person is also very important.
