The Tet Offensive is a common usage name of the first large-scale offensive communist forces during the Vietnam War in 1968. The Tet offensive is considered to be a turning point of the war, after which a public opinion in the U.S. has lost faith in the possibility of a victory in Vietnam. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most famous African-American Baptist preacher, brilliant orator, the leader of a nonviolent resistance to racism. Martin became the first active member of the U.S. black movement and the first ardent fighter for the civil rights of black people in the U.S., fighting against discrimination, racism and segregation. April 4, 1968, at 6:01 p.m. on Thursday, King was fatally shot by a sniper. Robert Francis Kennedy was an American politician and statesman. In 1968 he ran for the U.S. presidency by the Democratic Party. Robert Kennedy died on June 6, 1968 after a fatal gunshot wound received on June 5 after the utterance of speech on the victory in the primaries for the State of California in the pantry of the Hotel Ambassador. 1968 Democratic National Convention was a protest activity. Protests in 1968 consisted of the worldwide series of protests, mostly involving students and workers. These protests happened because of the assassination of Martin Luther King. Schlesinger, Arthur M. Jr. (1986) admits that “the convention also followed the assassination of Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who had been shot on June 5”. The protests in Chicago were unhappy. The police beat and arrested demonstrators at a completely legal activity. U.S. presidential elections in 1968 were held on November 5. According to Brown (1982) it was one of the tense elections in an American history. Democrats nominated Hubert Humphrey, and Republicans nominated the former Vice President Richard Nixon.
An independent candidate from a third party, George Wallace also took part in an election campaign. As a result, Nixon won, who promised to restore “law and order.” Elections in 1968 are regarded as crucial, graduated from the era of Democratic dominance in U.S. politics.
Hollywood blacklist is a list of art and culture in the U.S. in 1940-50 which prohibits professional activities because of their political beliefs. In the lists made by the owners of Hollywood studios, got members of the Communist Party USA, or suspected of sympathy for it, and refused to assist the authorities in the investigation of the Communist Party. The first list was drawn up by Hollywood studios on Nov. 25, 1947 after the rejection of ten filmmakers known as the “Hollywood ten, to give evidence to the Commission on Un-American Activities of the U.S. Congress. Later, they all received one year in prison. June 22, 1950 appeared a pamphlet Red Channels with a list of 151 people, called it “red fascists and their sympathizers”. Caught in the lists have experienced great difficulties in finding work, in fact deprived of the opportunity to work in the industry. The list values fell after 1960, when the painting came under the scenarios got a list of Dalton Trumbo – “Spartacus” and Stanley Kubrick’s “Exodus”, Otto Preminger. However, many of the fallen in the lists in the future continue to be denied work. Parish (2004) admitted that “the actor Larry Parks said when called before the panel: “Don’t present me with the choice of either being in contempt of this committee and going to jail or forcing me to really crawl through the mud to be an informer. For what purpose? I don’t think it is a choice at all. I don’t think this is really sportsmanlike. I don’t think this is American. I don’t think this is American justice”. According to Dick (1989) we see that Eric Johnston, President of the Motion Picture Association of America, stated that neither the Communists did not get a job, said: “They are a destructive force, and I do not want to see them around”.

To sum up the above-stated information I want to say that I discussed and explored the theme about Summer of Hate and Hollywood/Fiction. It is rightly named the Summer of Hate because it had a lot of negative situations in 1986. I want to mention that in 1950, all participants “Hollywood Ten” were imprisoned for one year for “Contempt of Congress”.
