Critical Writing Essay: The Old Woman’s Mistake

It was Saturday. Pete, Jack and Bob, the students of one of the US prestige universities decided to go shopping. They knew that their major goal was to buy new brand T-shirts. The guys were happy that they had a good chance to relax after a serious working week. Pete offered to go to some special sport shop, but Jack said: “No, we’ll go to the hypermarket!”

Jack knew that there was a great bar on the first floor where three friends would be able to drink some beer. Everything was fine. The guys were in good temper. They told jokes and had fun. After that Pete, Jack and Bob were ready to go upstairs and to choose new clothes. They needed new T-shirts because they were invited to take part in the university sport competitions.

The guys took the stairs too fast and found themselves on the second floor. Pete was the first to mount the stairs. He shouted loudly: “Hey, guys, I am the first! Come on! I am waiting for you!” An old woman in brown dress with a stick in her hand turned back and said: “You should not cry! You are not alone here! There are a lot of people around who hate such loud cries!” Pete did not know what to answer.

Of course, he could give a good respond to that woman, but she was so old that he decided to ignore her indignation. Jack asked Pete: “What’s wrong with you?” Pete answered that there was nothing special. He did not want to discuss this situation.

Pete, Jack and Bob made for the door of the sport department. The sales girl offered them to buy excellent T-shirts. The guys were satisfied with their purchase. However, it did not mean that the day was over. When the guys left the sport department, they saw an old woman with a stick in her hand. She was running towards them. Her hair was rather disheveled, and she looked very fraught. Jack said: “Look! She is running towards us! What does she want?”

The old woman stopped and hit Pete with her great stick. She cried: “That’s he…he thieved it from me…! He is a thief! Take him!” Pete cried: “What do you want? I do not know what you are talking about!” The security officers ran up to the guys. One of them asked: “What happened?” The old woman explained that one of the guys was a thief, he thieved his wallet. Pete tried to explain the security officers that it was a mistake but they insisted to go to their office and to clear up the mess there.

Of course, it was a mistake. The old woman thought that Pete thieved her wallet because she administered a sharp reproof to him when he was shouting loudly on the stairs. She said that it was his revenge. Pete was in shock. Moreover, he had a terrible backache. It was one of the worst days in his life. Fortunately, the security officers found the camera, and video record proved the fact that Pete was not a thief. It was clear that another guy had taken the old woman’s wallet when she was buying new shoes in the shoe department.
