The basic aim of any company is to reach specific desirable goals. In an effort to reach these goals, certain decisions should be made as to what type of structure the company will posses. This structure will include the matters of work and tasks, duties, the levels of management, the kind of mechanism for control the whole work.
One of the most popular forms of organizational structures in modern society is bureaucracy. This model is more like theoretical guide to making business design based on specific circumstances.
Bureaucratic structure is based upon the combination of the standard of legal authority and the trust in the market. Bureaucratic structure helps to create the rational system free from fancies of authoritarian systems. It is also characterized by rules within certain society.
However, in today’s society, it is practically impossible not to resist bureaucratic structuring several times within usual daily activities. Vast size of nations and their need for proficient organization does not allow personal relations to stand in the way of achieving aims. This system may be used by big companies. It helps to achieve goals that no individual could achieve alone.
Unfortunately, bureaucracy is developing as a dirty word within the minds of people. It is considered as an improvement at the expense of personal freedoms like choice. Other usual complaints about this specific structure include its distant nature which may be inhuman.
This is when the other system has to appear. Adhocracy is a system that breaks from the established ways of bureaucracy. It does not hold any rules or regulations, and in addition it has no standardized procedures for dealing with ordinary problems. Thus, the main emphasize of this system is its plasticity in dealing with all types of situations rapidly and proficiently.
Adhocracy was created to be flexible while managing altering demands. In today’s society, this system may be found at high risk organizations, newly developing industries and so on. If the companies continue to develop, they will probably become bureaucratic in nature. The reason for this is because adhocracy is restricted in the ability to handle huge groups of people.
An adhocracy is an organization that lacks structure. It is a kind of organization that cuts across standard bureaucratic lines to take opportunities, get results and solve problems. The term adhocracy is a reference to the absence of hierarchy. So, it is the opposite of a bureaucracy. This type of organization is usual among advertising agencies and other creativity-based firms. Adhocracy helps to cherish a team atmosphere. Adhocracy-type firm presupposes taking risks and being flexible as new deals appear.
