Coaching leadership focuses on developing individuals, showing them how to improve their performance, and helping to connect their goals to the goals of the organization (Murray, 2011). In fact, coaching leadership style implies that the leader helps his or her subordinates and stimulates the development of professional skills and abilities that can help his or her subordinates to work effectively and to meet organizational goals.
Affiliative leadership emphasizes the importance of team work, and creates harmony in a group by connecting people to each other (Murray, 2011). In fact, the affirmative leadership style implies that leadership stimulates the team work. The team work is headed and directed by the leader. The task of the leader is to organize the team work and to increase the cooperation within the team headed by the leader. The leader should balance the relationships within the team and establish positive, healthy organizational culture.
Democratic leadership draws on people’s knowledge and skills, and creates a group commitment to the resulting goals. It works best when the direction the organization should take is unclear, and the leader needs to tap the collective wisdom of the group (Murray, 2011). In fact, the democratic leadership style implies the creation of close, friendly ambiance, in which the leader can communicate effectively with his or her subordinates and subordinates feel that their leader is just one of them. Another leadership style is pacesetting leadership is the leadership style, where the leader sets high standards for performance. In such a way, the leader provides his or her subordinates with personal example and behavior pattern they should follow. In addition, the leader helps his or her subordinates to identify clearly goals they have to reach and the ways to reach the set goals.
Finally, the commanding leadership style is classic model of “military” style leadership – probably the most often used, but the least often effective. Because it rarely involves praise and frequently employs criticism, it undercuts morale and job satisfaction (Murray, 2011). The commanding leadership style implies the authoritarian leadership style, which means the strict subordination of employees to the leader and the full control of the leader over his or her subordinates.
C. Who is a Leader?
Taking into consideration the existing leadership theories and diverse leadership styles, it is possible to develop basic traits of character and characteristics of contemporary leaders. First of all, a leader should be a person, who has inherited inclinations to leadership. What is meant here is the fact that the leadership implies the existence of personal traits of character essential for the leader, such as charisma, the persuading power of the leader, his or her organizational skills, and others.
At the same time, a contemporary leader should be an effective manager. The combination of the leadership and management skills allow contemporary leaders to be effective and to reach organizational goals as well as lead people toward organizational goals. In such a way, leaders can work effectively and develop positive, healthy ambiance in their organization.
In addition, a contemporary leader should be flexible to respond to the changing business environment and to be able to work in diverse environment. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the fact that a contemporary leader should develop a flexible leadership style, which meets the cultural background of organizations where a leader works. In fact, an effective contemporary leader should adapt to the cultural background of his or her subordinates and to develop the leadership style that meets needs and expectations of his or her subordinates. Otherwise, a contemporary leader can hardly work effectively.
