Hyphens

Hyphens, perhaps the most creative punctuation marks, join two or more words to create a single word. Before constructing your own hyphenated words or using a hyphen in an industry term check your understanding:
a. . After receiving your letter, we took your ex-wife, Jennifer, off our guest list.
b. . After receiving your letter, we took your ex wife, Jennifer, off our guest list.
Answer: a.Why: All these prefixes take hyphens: “all,” “cross,” “ex,” “half,” “ill,” “well.” When it is a prefix and not part of the base word, “self” also takes a hyphen:

He is absurdly selfish.

but

Our managers must be diligent, but not self-sacrificing.

Also use a hyphen with the suffix “elect”:

The president-elect will introduce this month’s speaker.
