BACKGROUND
Beginning with the breakin of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel on June 17, 1972, by employees of the Committee to Reelect the President (Nixon), the Watergate affair took on a life of its own. Before it was finally over, when President Richard Nixon was forced to resign on August 9, 1974, many careers were ruined.
